Patrol Bridge Building Contest - June 2005

Boy Scouts of America - Troop 401 - Steubenville, Ohio


The troop patrols will be building bridges in June. The scouts are to work together in their patrols to design and build a bridge which can span a 10 inch gap using toothpicks. The bridge which holds the most weight will be the winning bridge. Bridges will be loaded using a mechanism placed on the top of the bridge at mid span.


Contest Date

Monday, June 27, 2005 at the final Troop Meeting of the program year.


Materials

The bridges will be made out of the following materials:

1. 1500 flat toothpicks (2 boxes - handed out)

2. one sheet of 8.5 x 11 notebook paper (handed out)

3. one 1 x 3 inch load support block (handed out)

4. wood glue


Rules

1. maximum of 2 inches wide

2. minimum of 11 inches long

3. shall be constructed to span a gap of 10 inches

4. 1 x 3 inch piece of wood (handed out) shall be built into the top of the bridge at mid-span to provide support location for loading mechanism

5. must use the materials handed out only - no other materials except wood glue shall be used

6. only wood glue shall be used for adhesive
